Are Painkillers Killing Your Hearing?
You may want to try Acupuncture Instead of Pain Killers for chronic pain issues. When you think of certain risk factors that may lead to permanent hearing loss, over-the-counter pain relievers aren’t often thought of ask a risk group.
A study group at Harvard recently published an article in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests that frequent use of Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen or even acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be one of the biggest contributors to hearing loss issues.
In this Harvard study, the vast majority of women who took the pain relievers twice a week seemed more likely to experience some hearing loss. With more frequent usage of these pain meds, the risk increased by up to 24%. The Harvard findings are very similar to a recent study of men who also experience similar hearing loss results. It should be noted that Aspirin, as well, in this study was found to contribute to some risk of hearing loss.
What Is The Issue With Pain Medication and Hearing Loss?
Researchers tended to speculate that the pain relievers mentioned in this article, seemed to be damaging the cochlea, which is the snail-shaped hearing mechanism that lies in the inner ear.
While Ibuprofen can reduce blood flow to the cochlea, it could however result in cellular damage to this part of the ear. Acetaminophen may deplete the antioxidant glutathione, that is responsible for protecting the cochlea from damage. Chances are if you think you are experiencing loss, then you probably do have a hearing loss problem. So a hearing checkup may be in order.
Acupuncture Is An Alternative To Pain Medication
While pain medication may be required in certain incidences, overuse can lead to hearing loss. This is why it is suggested that you try Acupuncture for chronic pain issues rather than using pain meds, which could eventually lead to inner ear hearing loss issues.
So before you pop a pill for headache or back pain, why not try acupuncture? These medicines do provide some good relief from certain pain types, but not all. And using pain medication day after day will result in problems such as hearing loss. Acupuncture on the other hand, is safe, and works for a variety of issues such as fibromyalgia, PTSD, anxiety, neck and back pain, as well as joint pain and arthritis.
What Should I Do?
A good rule of thumb, is to always, talk to your doctor before taking any drug especially if you taking it everyday for pain. Ask around for a good local acupuncturist and go in for a free consultation. It cost nothing to ask questions, in most cases. It is your health we are talking about and no one wants to lose their hearing.
